1. Summary

Our team came up with a smart field cover. This innovation can protect any type of field from sudden changes in temperature, and precipitation. The coating is light enough to cover the entire court with two panels, which are interconnected by Velcro tape along the midline. Before the rain, the court can be quickly closed, and you can start playing as soon as the rain stops, without waiting for the court to dry out. The main advantage of this cover is to spread cover all over the court you just need to press one button. This is possible because two mini electric vehicles are going to roll cover on the surface of the court. When the rain stops the beam on which the cover was wound will wrap it back. The biggest advantage of our innovation is that it’s not necessary to use humans because the whole system works automatically. The courts will always be dry and ready to be played.

2. Introduction

For many tennis players, particularly living in warm states like Florida, Texas, New Mexico, and Hawaii playing tennis in the rain is a common occurrence. Some players become accustomed to playing in cold and wet conditions and learn to thrive during the winter tennis leagues. However, most players feel insecure on a wet tennis court and lose their rhythm.

Though you can play on a wet court, there’s always a risk, as it depends on the player and the surface of the court they are playing on. Some tennis court surfaces gain more traction with rain, while others have no resistance and are too dangerous for games.

Natural grass becomes extremely slippery when wet. Hard courts are a more challenging surface to play on when wet, though they dry off pretty quickly in the sun.

Safety on the court varies according to different players and their reactions to weather conditions and the courts themselves. However, playing specifically on wet courts can increase the chances of severe injury that could leave players sidelined for months.

My team came up with a smart tennis court cover to protect the court from rain and prevent players from slipping. In our opinion players should enjoy the game instead of risking get injury on the wet surface. When it starts to rain our cover will fast and automatically cover the court and when the rain stops it will roll cover back automatically
3. Technical Description

The Smart Field Cover prevents the tennis court from the adverse weather effects. Our system uses vertical rails on of a court which two small machines go along. The machines will stretch the protective roll up from both left and right sides of the court as far as the net. This system will prevent water, ice, snow, and debris from coming into contact with the tennis court and minimize deterioration from weathering. Tennis courts in bad condition because of weathering puts players at higher risk for injury. Additionally, these these adverse climactic factors seep into the tennis court floors and create cracks over time. Using the Smart Field Cover is a reliable solution to this problem.

3.1 Roll of Tarpaulin

Our team uses tarpaulin as a cover because of its high tenacity material made from thick cotton weave paths. Tarpaulin is water-repellent and has a rough textured surface, increasing its friction. The main properties of tarpaulin are high

tensile strength, wear resistance ( i.e from stretching, friction, chemicals) wind protection properties, dirt-repellent properties, and environmental friendliness. We use two tarpaulins to protect each half of the court, which are approximately 18.5 meters in width and 20 meters in length.

3.2 Tarpaulin Winding Machine

Vertical winding of tarpaulin on a roll is used to quickly spread the cover before adverse weather hits. For those purposes, we choose to use the Hiancuang winding machine. Their product features a maximum winding

diameter of 1500mm (standard: 1200mm), electricity of 3 Phase-380V; 50HZ (can be adjusted),page5image29143648page5image28303808page5image29141568

electric frequency converter control mode, as well as work functions like automatic winding, stop and manual reversal. The speed can be synchronized with the machine that will pull, and the size can be adjusted according to the width of the client’s fabric (in our case 19 meters). There is approximately a ≤ 5mm deviation at the edges. The winding machine will have a button that ocntrols the roll out and intake of the tarpaulin.

3.3 Electricity Cables

There are a number of hazards for outdoor cables suhc as exposure to stretching, jerking during hard wind, or freezing. The insulation of

most modern products can be operated in frosts from -15 to -25. Ultraviolet light is biggest challenge of insulation, as it can cause the insulation to crack and leak over time. To solve these challenges we decided to lay the cable inside the ground. This protects the insulation from ultraviolet light, observation of temperature and wind, does not ruin the aesthetics of the site, and prevents the possibility of damage when carried along the line of objects. Placing the insulated cables inside the dirt can provide electricity to our tarpaulin winding machine.

3.4 Rails

Rails will be built into the sides of the court so that the machine can pull the tarpaulin. We chose rails

because it is a straight line that will go down the court as the machine unwinds the tarpaulin. The machine car moving 5 rails may deviate along the trajectory due to the wind. For example if thepage6image29138240page6image29139280

machines cars take a sharp left, it can create tension in the tarpaulin and cause a tear. Their recess will be dug inside the tennis court. Rails will be mounted in these resses. The length of each rail will be 20 meters.
3.5 Moving Machine

A rolling car with an electric motor will pull the cover forward and backward. The machine will move on rails because a straight line will guarantee the machine moves clearly back and forward. This prevents any deviations from the route, and stops the cover from breaking. The machine will move on 4 roller wheels, which will has a system that allows all 4 wheels to move forward and backward synchronously. The system is installed in ordinary wagons so that all the wheels spin at the same time. The electric motor will provide energy for the wheels to spin back and forth.
4. Conclusion

It’s always nice to come and start playing on a dry court. Our innovation will allow players to make this true everytime they come onto the court with the press of a button. The Smart Field Cover will unfold the weather resistant fabric and two moving machines will stretch the cover evenly across the court. Smart field cover makes sure that the conditions for playing tennis are always safe.

5. Appendix

The Smart Field Cover will be made in China because production there is cheaper due to low price of material and the labor. It would be greatly beneficial for our company’s profit.

Appendix 5.4

When performing our maintenance evaluation criteria important to determine how the machine is performing compared to other machines.

Evaluation Criteria
Is the machine running?
What is the condition of the rails?
What is the condition of the motor?
What is the condition of the wiring?
Is there any tearing on the sheets?

In the future, our company will create a mobile app that will automatically connect with the winding machines. The app will come with a more expensive premium package, to be acquired at time of purchase. This app will allow the customer to close the court from anywhere. The package includes the product, the mobile app and LED lights on the rails of the Smart Field Cover.

The Smart Field Cover for tennis courts is just one stepping stone for our company. We want to branch out our business to provide technology for various different sports, such as soccer, baseball, and football. This would increase our profit significantly, and allow us to create a cheaper product. A lower cost Smart Field Cover will allow us to reach the market of private homeowners.
